North Funen has been a well-populated area for thousands of years, and you can see it in the countryside, where there are many burial mounds and other exciting monuments of our past. Find the most beautiful monuments and look up how to get there!
Nordfyn’s past is right there in front of you - in the large burial mounds, passage graves and dolmens. And don’t forget Glavendrup, which has both Bronze Age burial mounds and a Viking Age ship setting. Nordfyn has been fertile farmland for thousands of years, and until the large land-reclamation projects from the 1700s, big parts of Nordfyn were closer to the sea and fjord than they are today.
That’s why there are still more than 40 burial mounds and other ancient monuments left in the Nordfyn landscape. Many old houses and manor estates on Nordfyn were also built using stones from these sites. Back then, the monuments weren’t protected, so farmers and landowners reused stones from ancient tombs in their own buildings. When you go for a walk in Nordfyn’s forests, you can also spot burial mounds.
Here you’ll find a list of some of the burial mounds and other monuments that are easiest to visit.
