What is a fredskov?
A fredskov - a forest conservation area - is an area where there must always be a forest. The trees may be felled, but the owner must then plant new trees. The concept of fredskov was written into law in 1805, when the Danish king and government wanted to protect the last forest areas in Denmark and create more forest areas. There was not much forest left - only 4% of Denmark was forest area. The state also began to plant new forests and provided subsidies to private landowners so they could plant new forests. In exchange for the subsidies, the landowners had to commit to permanent forestry in the area - the so-called fredskov. That's how we got the Fredskov in Bogense.
